| Ouarzazate Morocco | |||
| Pronounce the name Ouarzazate and Europeans have visions of holidays in the sun... It is true that this ancient garrison town has an exceptional location : it is situated on a vast desert plateau, where the temperature can reach 45°C in the summer. What a contrast with the nearby snow-covered peaks of the High-Atlas mountains ! These provide Ouarzazate with splendid surroundings, which have made the town very demanded by film directors. Many historical reconstitutions have been shot in the region. However, Ouarzazate owes its tourist success to the quality of its hotel complex. The state-of-the-art infrastructures have made the town an ideal stopping place for all visitors to the magnificent Dadès and Draa valleys. What can you visit in Ouarzazate ? Kasbah of Traouirt (east of the town) This used to be the residence of the Pasha of Marrakech (19th century) and is considered as one of the most beautiful stately homes in Morocco. The cob buildings comprise luxurious apartments, simple dwellings and highly decorated crenellated towers. The apartments of the Glaoui may be visited - the dining room and the favourite's bedroom in particular have kept their decoration of painted stucco and cedar-wood ceilings. The Crafts Center Located opposite the kasbah of Traouirt, this centre offers various products of the local arts and crafts industry, including the famous "Ouzgita" carpets. The oases and mountains in the Ouarzazate region conceal many treasures. The ksurs (fortified villages) and kasbahs (citadels), with their cob walls, are splendid architectural vestiges of the Great South which will carry you into a different world, where time seems to have been stopped some centuries ago. The region can be visited following four routes : · The Marrakech road (north-west), · The Gorges of Dadès and Todra (north-east), · The Dadès and Draa valleys (east and south-east). |
